Logitech presents VX Nano notebook mouse

Logitech unveiled its new VX Nano cordless laser mouse which builds on the foundation laid down by the original VX Revolution notebook mouse (including the MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel), but now features a more slim and trim design low-profile design.

The mouse also now uses two AAA batteries instead of one AA battery like the VX Revolution.

The most appealing element at this mouse is the new "nano-receiver" included in the packing. Instead of sticking out at least an inch from the side of a notebook like traditional USB receivers, the nano-receiver protrudes by only 8mm. The receiver, however, still uses 2.4GHz cordless technology

instead of Bluetooth.

"More and more laptop users are abandoning the touch pad in favor of a cordless notebook mouse," said Logitech's Rory Dooley. "However, with most notebook mice, the size of the receiver forces people to plug and unplug the receiver each time they use the laptop. Because we were able to make the nano-receiver so small, it can remain plugged into the laptop at all times so on-the-go notebook users save valuable time and never have to worry about where the receiver is."

Intel Atom Processor

To connect people to the internet at any time, mobile technology is making computing accessible in the mobile phones. The Intel Atom processor is a low power processor specially designed for mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The Intel Atom processor is based on an exclusively new micro-architecture designed particularly for small devices and low power, while maintaining the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set compatibility to which consumers are habituated with when using a standard PC and the Internet. The devise also comprises support for multiple threads for better performance and improved system responsiveness. All of this on a chip that measures less than 25 mm². These new chips, previously codenamed Silverthorne and Diamondville, will be manufactured in Intel’s 45nm process with hi-k metal gate technology. The chips have a thermal design power (TDP) specification in 0.6-2.5 watt range and scale to 1.8GHz speeds depending on customer need. By comparison, today’s mainstream mobile Core 2 Duo processors have a TDP in the 35-watt range. The Intel Centrino Atom processor technology, formerly codenamed “Menlow,” includes the Intel Atom processor, a low-power companion chip with integrated graphics, a wireless radio, and thinner and lighter designs. Remote Desktop technology of Windows XP

Windows XP helps protect data transmitted across a network. IP Security is an important part of providing security for virtual private networks (VPNs), which allow organizations to transmit data securely over the Internet and a firewall client that can protect small businesses from common Internet attacks. Windows XP Professional makes it significantly easier for you to remotely connect to networks, including to VPNs, over dialup connections, infrared and direct cable connections.

What is VPN?

VPN uses a technique known as tunneling to transfer data securely on the Internet to a remote access server on your workplace network. Using a VPN helps you save money by using the public Internet instead of making long-distance phone calls to connect securely with your private network.

There are two ways to create a VPN connection:
  • By dialing an Internet service provider (ISP).
  • By connecting directly to the Internet.

What is Remote Assistance?

Remote Assistance enables a user to share control of his or her computer with someone on a network or the Internet. An administrator or friend can view the user's screen, and control the pointer and keyboard to help solve a technical problem. IT departments can build custom solutions, on top of published APIs using HTML, to tailor Remote Assistance to their needs, and the feature can be centrally enabled or disabled.

What is Remote Desktop?

Remote Desktop is based on Terminal Services technology. Using Remote Desktop, you can run applications on a remote computer running Windows XP Professional from any other client running a Microsoft Windows operating system.

Remote Desktop lets you take advantage of the flexibility provided by a distributed computing environment. A standard component of Windows XP Professional (although not included in Windows XP Home Edition), Remote Desktop lets you access your Windows XP computer from anywhere, over any connection, using any Windows-based client. Remote Desktop gives you secure access to all your applications, files, and network resources-as if you were in front of your own workstation. Any applications that you leave running at the office will be running when you connect remotely-at home, in a conference room, or on the road.

Remote Desktop works well even under low-bandwidth conditions, because all your applications are hosted on the Terminal Server. Only keyboard, mouse, and display information are transmitted over the network.

If you're an IT administrator, Remote Desktop provides you with a rapid response tool: It lets you remotely access a server running Windows 2000 Server or Whistler Server and see messages on the console, administer the computer remotely, or apply headless server control.

Remote Desktop Protocol:

The features provided by Remote Desktop are made available through the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). RDP is a presentation protocol that allows a Windows-based terminal (WBT), or other Windows-based clients, to communicate with a Windows-based Terminal Server. RDP is designed to provide remote display and input capabilities over network connections for Windows-based applications running on your Windows XP Professional desktop. RDP works across any TCP/IP connection, including a dial-up connection, local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), DSL, or Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Remote Desktop Resource Redirection:

When you use Remote Desktop from a Windows XP-based client, or another RDP 5.1-enabled client, many of the client resources are available within the Remote Desktop connection.These resources include:

File system redirection

This makes the local file system available on the remote desktop within a terminal session. The client file system is accessible through the Remote Desktop as if it was a network-shared drive, and no network connectivity-except the Remote Desktop-is required. The client drives appear in Windows Explorer with the designation " on tsclient."

Printer redirection

This route printing jobs from the Terminal Server to a printer attached to the local computer. When the client logs on to the remote computer, the local printer is detected, and the appropriate printer driver is installed on the remote computer.

Port redirection

This enables applications running within a terminal session to have access to the serial and parallel ports on the client. Port redirection allows these ports to access and manipulate devices such as bar code readers or scanners.

Audio

You can run an audio-enabled application on your remote desktop and hear the audio output from speakers attached to the computer you're working on.

Clipboard

The Remote Desktop and the client computer share a clipboard that allows data to be interchanged.

Remote Desktop Web Connection in windows XP:

The Remote Desktop Web Connection provides a simple way to connect to your Windows XP Professional remote desktop, even when you don't have the Remote Desktop client software installed on the computer you're currently using (called the client computer). Before you can use the Remote Desktop Web Connection from home or the road, you need to set up Remote Desktop on the remote computer.

Remote Desktop Web Connection isn't installed by default in Windows XP Professional, so you'll need to add it yourself to the remote computer. And to add it, you'll also need to enable Internet Information Services (IIS) on your remote desktop.

Remote Desktop Web Connection means you can work from home or the road, and access all the data and capabilities of your office computer. Bookmark your remote desktop in Internet Explorer and you can get There are several issues to consider when managing and administering Remote Assistance in the corporate environment or large organization. You can specify an open environment where employees can receive Remote Assistance from outside the corporate firewall. Or you can restrict Remote Assistance via Group Policy and specify various levels of permissions such as only allowing Remote Assistance from within the corporate firewall.

Issues of Proxy server/Firewall:

Regardless of how you connect to a Remote Desktop server, if either your client or your server is behind a firewall or proxy server, you won't be able to connect unless you open up the necessary port, 3389, to permit the Remote Desktop Connection capability to pass through.

Here server means the computer that's actually serving up the Remote Desktop session. This could be a Windows XP Professional-based computer running Remote Desktop Services, or earlier versions of Microsoft Windows NT/2000 Server running Terminal Services, or even a Windows NT 3.5-based computer running Citrix.

One can easily open up the Remote Desktop port when you're using the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) included in Windows XP. Heck, you don't even need to remember the port number, but if your network is running some other firewall, you'll need to work with your network administrators to sort out the details for it.

Remote Assistance:

Remote Assistance runs over the top of Terminal Services technology, which means it, needs to use the same port already used by Terminal Services: port 3389.If the person who is being helped is behind a firewall, NAT, or ICS, Remote Assistance will still function as long as the person being helped initiates the session via Windows Messenger. However, as stated above, Remote Assistance will not work in cases when the outbound traffic from port 3389 is blocked.

Using Remote Assistance in a Home Environment:
If you are using Personal Firewall or NAT in a home environment, you can use Remote Assistance without any special configurations. However, if you have a corporate-like firewall in a home environment, the same restrictions apply: you would need to open Port 3389 in order to use Remote Assistance.

Sonoma Chipset

The new Sonoma Platform, Intel's next-generation Centrino
Chipset is already on the market. Members of the Sonoma
club are growing daily - Sony, IBM/Lenovo, BenQ, Dell,
Samsung, Acer, and Toshiba... another 80 or 90
'Sonoma-endowed' products will be released very shortly.

No doubt, it will become the Platform standard for many
high-end notebooks. Actually, it won't make or mean that
much difference to the ordinary Joe/Jane who just want a
notebook or laptop for web surfing, word processing and
e-mail. Notebooks with the Sonoma Platform will be just
a little bit faster and have a little better battery life.

But for Mobile Professionals and Notebook Fanatics (they
do exist)... there's a lot of good things delivered or
capable of being delivered with this new Centrino Chipset.
First, wireless connections will be easier with the integrated
tri-mode 802.11a/b/g, already dubbed by some as the
'wireless trinity'! This will make it easier to stay
connected no matter where you are.

Improved performance will be experienced because the
new Pentium M's have a 533MHz frontside bus, supported
with up to 2GB of DDR2 DRAM, Serial ATA Hard Drive, and
PCI Express, plus improved integrated graphics - including
Intel's Hi-Def Audio. All are possible with the Sonoma
Platform.

Premium mobile technologies

There’s more management shuffling at Motorola as the struggling handset maker works to regain profitability and plans to split itself in two. The handset maker has named Rob Shaddock as the new head of consumer products for the group. A former senior vice president of mobile devices, Shaddock will now oversee all handsets except those aimed at business users.

John Cipolla has been promoted to senior vice president for mid- to high-tier products; Steve Lalla, will now oversee teams focused on mass-market handsets; and Todd DeYoung, who currently heads strategy and business development for the group, will now be responsible for making sure handsets fit in with the company’s overarching strategy and are market-appropriate.

Aside from promotions, the reorganization combines hardware and software teams within each product category under one leader. The category heads will have more authority over the entire development process. The company said the latest reorganization is aimed at improving product development strategy and creating a more “predictable” time to market for new products. The new promotions should also help the group keep senior executives when the company splits in two.

The company also announced a reorganization of its sales staff, naming Bruce Brda as the head of coordinating worldwide sales. Brda previously oversaw sales for North America.

PalmSource Inc. on Tuesday launched the latest version of its operating system, which targets manufacturers of the increasing number of advanced cellular phones in the market.

Palm OS Cobalt 6.1 provides integrated telephony features, support for wireless technologies Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and enhancements to the user interface.

"We believe Palm OS Cobalt 6.1 optimizes our platform for the creation of cutting-edge smartphones and wireless devices that are powerful yet easy-to-use," David Nagel, president and chief executive of PalmSource, said in a statement issued from the company's developer conference in Munich, Germany.

Smartphones are advanced cellular phones that include cameras and many of the features found in handheld computers, such as calendaring and contact lists. While smartphones make up a small portion of the cellular phone market today, their share is expected to grow.

The number of cellular phones sold this year is expected to reach 620 million units, according to researcher Gartner Inc. Consumers replacing older phones with feature-rich, color-screen handsets are driving sales in mature markets, such as Western Europe and North America.

The Palm OS Cobalt 6.1 supports GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications; and GPRS, or General Packet Radio Service, which enables continuous flows of IP data packets for such applications as Web browsing and file transfers. A GPRS application-programming interface is available to make it easier for handset makers to deliver smartphone features.

The OS also includes interruptible hot sync, automatic backup and built-in support for one-handed and five-way navigation.

PalmSource's push into the smartphone market is pivotal, given the ground its OS has lost against rival Microsoft Corp.'s Windows CE in the market for handheld computers, also called personal digital assistants.

In the first quarter of the year, Palm OS and Windows CE were tied in PDA OS shipments, with about 40 percent each. Palm OS shipments fell by 20.7 percent from the same period a year, while Windows CE continued its climb upwards. In 2000, Microsoft's OS accounted for only 11 percent of the market.

PDA shipments overall, however, have been steadily declining, as an increasing number of consumers switch to cellular phones with similar capabilities.

In other news from the PalmSource Euro DevCon, PalmSource started shipping version 3.0 of its web browser, which has been enhanced for use in smartphones with such features as page zooming, scalable fonts and squeeze-rendering, which allow users to eliminate horizontal scrolling for easier navigation.

In addition, PalmSource released the Palm OS Developer Suite 1.0 for building multimedia and wireless applications for Palm-powered devices. The tools are available at no charge through PalmSource's web site.

The Latest Mobile Phone Technology

The latest mobile phone handsets provide a wide range of services and technology that allows the user to be as interactive as possible with the global community. WiFi Technology

What is Wi-Fi?

WiFi is a wireless technology brand owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance intended to improve the operating of wireless products. Common applications for Wi-Fi include Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and network connectivity for consumer electronics such as mobile phones, laptops, game consoles, MP3 players and PDA's. Wi-Fi also allows connectivity which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode is useful in consumer electronics and gaming applications.

It's faster and has a greater range than Bluetooth, and is ideal for home or office connectivity. In the near future, wireless networking may become so widespread that you can access the Internet just about anywhere at any time, without using wires. The easy access of emails for business orientated individuals is also a bonus, as urgent messages can be downloaded on the go once the email settings are configured on to the WiFi enabled handset.

The mobile phones market has received a lot of attention lately as several operators across the world have launched various types of handsets which allow users to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, the iPhone being the ultimate example.

Mobile VoIP

A new study from a London-based research firm claims that mobile voice-over-IP will become a mainstream form of communication by the end of 2012, based on rapid growth of voice-over-3G wireless users. Disruptive Analysis said its research shows mobile VoIP will eclipse fixed-mobile convergence services that use dual-mode handsets with voice-over-WiFi capabilities.

VoIP has become popular largely because of the cost advantages to consumers over traditional telepone networks. VoIP calls can be placed across the Internet. Most Internet connections are charged using a flat fee structure. Using the Internet connection for both data traffic and voice calls can allow consumers to get rid of one monthly payment. In addition, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long distance. For International calling, the monetary savings to the consumer from switching to VoIP technology can be enormous.

Today, Skype, TruPhone and a company called Fring already offer VoIP over 3G smartphones and 3G-enabled laptops allowing users to communicate with other VoIP users via the Internet. This service is expected to provide customers with a cheaper alternative to connecting calls via GSM in the near future.

HSDPA

High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. Current HSDPA deployments support down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 Mbit/s. Further speed increases are planned for the near future.

4G Technology

What is fourth generation (4G) mobile?

4G, an acronym for Fourth-Generation Communications System, is a term used to describe the next step in wireless communications. A 4G system will be able to provide a comprehensive IP solution where voice, data and streamed multimedia can be given to users on an "Anytime, Anywhere" basis, and at higher data rates than previous generations. There is no formal definition for what 4G is; however, there are certain objectives that are projected for 4G. These objectives include: that 4G will be a fully IP-based integrated system. This will be achieved after wired and wireless technologies converge and will be capable of providing 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s speeds both indoors and outdoors, with premium quality and high security. 4G will offer all types of services at an affordable cost.

4G is being developed to accommodate the quality of service (QoS) and rate requirements set by forthcoming applications like wireless broadband access, Multimedia Messaging Service, video chat, mobile TV, High definition TV content, DVB, minimal service like voice and data, and other streaming services for "anytime-anywhere". 4G in principle will allow high-quality smooth video transmission. It will enable fast downloading of full-length songs or music pieces in real time.

The business of 4Gmobile is predicted to be huge. By 2009, this 4Gmobile market will be over $400B. This 4Gmobile technology will dominate the wireless communications, and its converged system will replace most conventional wireless infrastructure.

What will the data rates be for 4G?

At present the download speed for mobile Internet connections range from 9.6 kbit/s for 2G cellular, up to 200 kbit/s (nominally 384 kbps) for the new Vodafone 3G service (mentioned above). However, in actual use the data rates are usually slower, especially in crowded areas, or when the network is "congested".

4G mobile data transmission rates are planned to be up to 20 megabits per second That’s about 10-20 times faster than standard ASDL services.

In terms of connection seeds, 4G will be about 200 times faster than present 2G mobile data rates, and about 10 times faster than 3G broadband mobile. 3G data rates are currently 2Mbit/sec, which is very fast compared to 2G's 9.6Kbit/sec.

Nokia's Mobile Tv Technology Gets Semiofficial Status in Eu

BRUSSELS -(Dow Jones)- The European Commission Thursday suffered a setback in its attempts to advance Nokia Corp.'s DVB-H technology for mobile television as the single standard in Europe, after the member states' ministers concluded that it should not be a mandatory standard.

However, European Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said she won enough backing to ensure it becomes the European mobile TV standard in any case.

The European telecommunication ministers said that although DVB-H had the "potential" to become the most common standard, it should be left to the market to decide which technology emerges in the end. The ministers also said that it was important for the commission to maintain "technology neutrality" for the time being.

However, the ministers welcomed the commission's plan to add the standard into its official list of standardsas a "non-mandatory standard" in order to speed up the adoption of Mobile TV - handsets offering television - in Europe.

The ministers also said that some steps could be taken to ensure both the interoperability of services and freedom of choice for users.

Reding said the inclusion of DVB-H technology in the official list in February would be enough to ensure its de facto position as the European mobile TV standard.

It means that "all 27 member states have to support and encourage" the adoption of the technology, thus avoiding market fragmentation and allowing economies of scale, the commission said.

The commission has backed the DVB-H standard as the "strongest contender" for future mobile television broadcasts, despite there being other options, partly because it is based on European technology with the support of E.U. funds.

Other technologies include Qualcomm's FLO platform, known as MediaFLO, which has gained ground in the USA, and ISDB-T technology, which is the standard in Japan and Brazil.

The global market for mobile TV could reach EUR20 billion by 2011, the commission predicts.

Naming a single standard is more common in Europe than the U.S, and is usually done to ensure interoperability across countries. However, when an industry is in its infancy, preferring one technology over another may come at a cost to innovation and consumer choice, onlookers said.

Devicescape Makes Use of Wifi Hotspots Easier With Mobile Devices

Jukka over at the Nokia Web Server blog made me aware of an interesting new service from Devicescape which will be bundled with Nokia Nseries and Eseries phones that makes using Wifi hotspots easier in the future.

You probably know the hassle. You sit down at the airport but before you can use the local Wifi network a user name and password has to be entered on a web page to get access to the Internet. While inconvenient with a notebook it's still manageable since you have a keyboard available. With a mobile device however, typing in user names and passwords on a web page becomes a real pain.

Devicescape has an elegant solution for this. A little program, that has to be installed on the phone, checks all Wifi networks and automatically logs into those it knows. Usernames and passwords are stored on a centralized server so the user never has to type them in on the mobile device. When accessing the network from a Wifi hotspot they are downloaded automatically and entered into the web page by the program.

I was a bit puzzled at first. How can they store passwords remotely? Usually, access to the Internet is only possible once one the username and password have been entered on the web page. Devicescape uses an interesting trick to circumvent this. They piggyback their server interaction on DNS (Domain Name Server) queries which are required to resolve a URL (e.g. http://mobilesociety.typepad.com) into a numeric IP address. This works even before full access to the Internet is granted. The DNS server system has a treelike structure so a DNS query to a Devicescape URL will end up on the central Devicescape server. The server then checks the request and returns the username and password in the answer.
